Diary
Guillain-Barre Syndrome So after being overly sick with what we believed to be Mono since the beginning of May, I was finally admitted to the hospital last Wednesday night. By that point I was no longer eating and what I attempted to eat I was unable to keep down and I had lost the ability to walk or even stand on my own. After collapsing in my mom's arms on the way to the bathroom, my mom made the executive decision to go back to the Emergency Room and try to get admitted. (We had been to the Emergency Room already the Sunday before but they believed that I was dehydrated from the Mono and sent me home.) Well eight days in the hospital, one spinal tap, two IV's, lots of viles of blood, and a ton of morphine later I am home. I ended up having Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). I am not going to go into much detail because this website is for happy things and I want to keep it that way but to find out more about GBS check out this article ( http://www.webmd.com/brain/tc/Guillain-Barre-Syndrome-Topic-Overview). I have a lot of physical therapy ahead of me but I am optimistic that I will be in tip top shape for the wedding. I refuse to be a gimpy bride for Derek. He deserves to have a happy and healthy bride!
Our New Home! We now are proud renters of a new apartment! Hooray for us!! Today Derek and I moved into our new home, a one bedroom apartment on the second floor at Standing Bear Lake Apartments today. I am completely in love with it and can't wait until I can move into it in August. Derek is really looking forward to having his own space. Tomorrow we are renting a Uhaul and bring over all of our bigger furniture. Our brand new bedroom set should be delivered sometime this week too! Today we brought over a bunch of totes and boxes of little things and spent the day organizing and putting things away. I had so much fun and I think Derek did too. It is such a great feeling knowing that we now have a place that is ours together. To me, this is another thing that makes everything feel so real between Derek and me.
Engagement Pictures Derek and I finally took our engagement pictures today. I have really been looking forward to getting them taken. Derek wore a red polo shirt and khaki shorts and I wore a tan shirt with a red tank top underneath and jeans. We went to Elmwood Park to the grotto area and had a blast. Dana was so great and just let Derek and I be natural together. I can't wait to see the pictures; I hope they turned out great!
Then this afternoon I had an interview with Pentagon Federal Credit Union. Derek used to work there and now that we have decided to move into the Standing Bear Lake Apartments, I thought that it would be very convenient for me to work there. I think my interview went really well and I should here back from them in a few days. Wish me luck!
Kansas City This weekend Derek, Dustin, JoAnna, and I drove down to Kansas City for some baseball. The Twins were playing a three game stretch against Kansas City so we all decided that we would go down there. We went to the afternoon game yesterday. The Twins ended up winning 7-5 but we didn't get to see any Twin home runs. We did get to see Boof Bonser pitch though so that made me happy! After the game we went and checked into our hotel. We then drove to a shopping center so that JoAnna and I could go shopping at Forever 21. We ended up eating dinner at a restaurant called Tomfooleries. It was pretty good. Derek and I had intentions to go to a bar that some of the Twins players sometimes show up at but by the time we got back to the hotel we were too tired. Today we woke up and went straight to the ballpark. It was chilly and rainy when we got there, but the game went off without a problem. The Twins lost which really stunk but overall I think we all had a great weekend!
PayPal Derek started his first day of training at PayPal today. I know that this is a huge turning point in Derek's life, and mine too. He is now part of one of the best places to work in Omaha, he seems to be excited about it, and he will be making better money on top of phenomenal benefits. I hope that this job is everything that Derek is looking for and more. He works so hard in everything he does; he deserves to have a job that he enjoys.
Flowers, Beautiful Flowers Today my mom, our family friend Jana, and I went to Mulhalls to pick out my flowers for the wedding. We met with Frank who is head of the fresh cut floral department and he was great. I showed him some pictures of what I wanted and told him the look I was going for. He seemed like he understood everything I was explaining and was sure he could create my dream bouquets. I am really looking forward to seeing our bright pink, orange, and lime green flowers in August. One more big thing done!
Positive Shift I did not write about this before now because I didn't want to jinx it. They day that Derek left for Florida, he had an interview with PayPal. He hadn't applied out there in over four months and he got a call one day when we were at lunch. He had a twenty minute phone interview and then they asked him to come in for a face to face interview. He thought the interviews went well. They told him that they would email him regardless if he got the job or not. So he got on the plane to Florida and I checked his email daily while he was gone. He never got any sort of email, so we figured he didn't get the job. Today while I was working on some wedding things Derek called me and told me the good news. PayPal called him and offered him a job. How exciting! This is a positive shift in our lives that we are welcoming with open arms. He starts training on April 16th. They gave him a poor schedule though. At the moment he is scheduled to work Saturday through Wednesday 3:30- 12:00 am. That shift stinks but after thirty days he can request a schedule change. Eventually Derek wants to go to the Saturday, Sunday, Monday twelve hour shifts when it becomes available. So a big Congratulations goes out to him!! He definitely deserves it!
22 Isn't As Exciting As 21 Derek would probably have to agree with that. But it is still his birthday regardless. He had to work all day. When he got off work he went home and got cleaned up and came over to my house. My parents bought him a tool box for all of his tools he got for Christmas. We went to Ameristar for dinner at the Ameri-Sports Bar. Dinner was good, we decided to get dessert shots after dinner. We all thought they were going to be actual shots but they were actually little servings of desserts in shot glasses. They were okay, but they sounded better than they ended up being. After dinner Derek and I went over to the casino to play slots for a little while. Derek lost ten dollars and I left five dollars ahead. I know it wasn't the most fun or the best birthday he has ever had, but I hope he enjoyed it a little bit!
Flower Girl On a complete whim my mom and I decided to go to the mall to look for a flower girl dress for Delaney. My mom had seen a really cute one in an advertisement and she wanted to show it to me. With Easter coming up soon, we figured this would be the best time for us to start looking. We found quite a few at Younkers, two that we absolutely loved. I bought them both so I could let Darcy and Delaney pick their favorite. Actually, I couldn't decide which one I liked better between the two so I was just going to let them choose. Delaney tried them both on and picked out her favorite and after seeing them both on her, Darcy and I agreed with her choice. Darcy decided to keep the other one for Delaney to wear for Easter this year. Now I just need to find her a basket and some shoes and she will be done!
Finally a Decision This morning Shelby, Kristi, and I went to Lincoln. Something came up and Candice couldn't join us. We went to look at one more possibility for the bridesmaids dresses. I really wanted to go and look at them in person because the green color they offered was the exact color I dreamed the girls would wear. We found Ellynne Bridal with no problems. When we got there it was pretty small and it was really crowded. We all split up and looked in different places. We ended up finding a few of the dresses we were looking for and ducked into a dressing room. After the girls tried on a few, Shelby put on my personal favorite. She loved it and so did Kristi and so did I! We all decided right then that all three girls would wear the same dress. It was a good feeling to have a decision after all the looking we did. The lady who was helping us at the bridal shop told us about these really cute shoes at their sister store, E2 Prom. After driving around for a long time, back and forth down 70th street, we finally found it. But it ended up to be a waste of time because the shoes were ugly. I really wanted to go to Ten Thousand Villages in Haymarket Park to look for necklaces for the girls. After going to Ten Thousand Villages and striking out, we decided to eat lunch at Lazlos across the street. As always it was good and the conversation was fun. We headed back to Omaha after lunch. We counted somewhere between 65 and 70 cars, trucks, and semis that were off the road from the previous two days' weather. When we got back to Omaha, none of us had any plans for the evening so we went shopping for shoes. Shelby and Kristi picked out the shoes they want to wear and chose ivory for the color. We wished Candice could have been a part of our successful day, she was definitely missed!
